I like to learn new things, don’t you? First, let’s talk berries. Did you know that an avocado is a berry and that a strawberry is not?

For a fruit to be a berry it has to have seeds inside. Strawberries have seeds on the outside so it isn’t really a berry. Now nuts—seeds surrounded by a hard wood-like covering are nuts. They even float in water. Peanuts are not really nuts! They are pods. What are pods? Pods have a row of seeds that stick to the inside of the fruit like a pea pod or a peanut.

March 4 was a day to see bighorn sheep. At Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort and Spa, scopes were set up by the Arizona Fish and Game Department to see sheep. We didn’t see any because it was too windy and they usually stay on the other side of Santa Catalina Mountains. 

In Arizona, there are about 6,000 bighorn sheep. Translocations were done to get bighorns to our mountains. There are many reasons why bighorns disappeared in the 1990s. It could have been that people were building too close to their habitat, or drought, or disease or even the lack of wildfires.

For those of you who don’t know, Odyssey of the Mind is a program where teams of five to seven kids have to solve problems. There are different competitive divisions: Division I is grades 3–5, Division II is grades 6–8, Division III is grades 9–12, and Division IV is for college. Last, there’s the Primary Division for grades K–2. You only compete with your division.

Jay Johnson, the UofA’s Head Baseball Coach, is ready for his second season with the Wildcats after finishing 49-24 last year and making it all the way to the National College World Series Championship.

Johnson says there are a lot of good things about being the head coach of the Wildcats. 

“I get to wear a baseball uniform to work every day. I’ve grown up my whole life being a part of a team, and I get to be a part of the team every day,” he says.
