The U.S. Women’s Soccer team is competing in Australia and New Zealand—hoping to bring home its fifth World Cup! If the team is successful, it would be their third straight title win, which is something no team, men or women, has done before.
The 23-player roster includes long-time, well-known veterans like Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Kelley O’Hara; all three of those women are playing in their fourth World Cup. However, the team also has 14 players who had never played in a World Cup before, the youngest being 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson. Many of the team members see the value in the DIVERSITY of their age and experience.
“We do have such a rich history and just trying to convey that to the younger players. And I think that they know it. But going to a World Cup really, really helps you feel that,” said O’Hara.
The World Cup brings together the best players from countries all around the world. While the United States has a mix of young energy and veteran experience, the players knew they had a tough road at the start of the tournament. After a 3-0 win against Vietnam, the game against the Netherlands ended in a 1-1 draw. Teams from Brazil, England, Germany and Spain are all solid competitors for the World Cup this year.
This summer’s tournament is expected to be the most watched women’s World Cup ever, with organizers hoping to draw two billion viewers worldwide. More than one million tickets were sold before the event started! It is an interesting time in the sport after last year’s historic equal pay settlement with U.S. Soccer.
“It feels like this is like a paradigm shift or a moment we will look back to and say, nothing was ever the same after this women’s World Cup and what we’re going to be able to do,” said Rapinoe. “I just think it’s going to be an incredible event. And I think everybody is thankfully pushing in the same direction now, and sky’s the limit from here.”
