TUCSON VILLAGE FARM HONES HEALTHY HABITS

I got a great opportunity to interview a former young reporter, Dee Catalan, a member of the Tucson Village Farm (TVF). Dee helps out with their program for kids. The TVF was formed in 2010 by Leza Carter and Elizabeth Sparks. It was made so that kids would learn where their food came from and to create hands-on experiences for them.

Dee was a part of AmeriCorps and needed to get volunteer hours. They were struggling for a job, and their friends recommended working at the TVF. Finally, Elizabeth Sparks called them and said there was one more spot available to help volunteer at the farm, and Dee accepted.

Dee’s job at the farm is to help out with the summer camps, specifically the culinary camp. Dee stated that the biggest challenge was building up a relationship with individual kids since it was hard to talk to them one on one because the camp was made up of multiple kids.

Something Dee hoped every kid took away from the summer camps was to be able to understand how personal decisions affect them and learning where their food comes from. Their main goal was to want people to know and understand good eating habits. To learn more about TVF and its programs, visit tucsonvillagefarm.arizona.edu.
