The Little Mermaid
Disney is looking to make a big splash with the latest version of a classic tale. It’s not a tale as old as time, but a live-action retelling of “The Little Mermaid.” Based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, the movie will feature three new songs written by Alan Menken, composer of the original Disney animated film, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also penned lyrics for “Moana” and “Encanto.”
Halle Bailey stars as the titular character, an adventurous mermaid who wants to explore the world beyond her ocean home. Melissa McCarthy plays the villainous sea witch, Ursula. “The Little Mermaid” opens May 26 and is rated PG.
Elemental
Do opposites attract? Can you get along with someone who is very different from you? Disney/Pixar’s “Elemental” takes place in a world where the folks seem to have little in common.
In Element City, the fire, water, land and air residents don’t often mix or else chaos ensues. But when the fiery Ember meets cool water guy Wade, the two find that they have more in common than they first thought. “Elemental” is in theaters June 16.
Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken
This animated movie gives a new perspective on the idea of heroes and villains. In “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken,” the protagonist is an awkward high school student who learns that there’s more to her than meets the eye.
When Ruby finds out that she comes from a long line of legendary sea monsters, she must rise to the occasion and protect the world’s oceans. Lana Condor voices Ruby. “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken” opens June 30.
Not Just for Kids
Some familiar names may catch your attention, but check with your parents before you head to the movies. A few summer films based on toys or comic books are rated PG-13.
