ELIO IS OUT OF THIS WORLD

Many scientists, astronomers, and philosophers have spent ages trying to answer the question: Are we alone in the universe? Well, the newest Disney Pixar film is sure to answer that! Elio is a whimsical and quirky animated film that combines science fiction and fantasy, with a hint of fact.

The movie opens with Elio, a young boy who wishes to find a friend among a sea of humans who don’t understand him. After he learns about the Golden Record, he becomes obsessed with aliens and sends a transmission into deep space from the Montez Air Force Base, where his aunt Olga works. Soon after, he gets abducted by a group of extraterrestrials called the Communiverse. There, he meets Glordon, Ambassador Questa, Ooooo, and more on the space adventure of a lifetime! By the way, the Golden Record featured in the movie is real and is hurtling through space aboard Voyager 1, in the hope of finding proof of alien life.

I had low expectations when Elio first premiered in theaters. Now, I love this creative and original concept! My favorite character is Questa because they have the amazing ability to read the minds of others. The character designs likely originated from deep-sea creatures, such as stingrays, jellyfish, and crabs. This movie was a box office flop, but many people, including myself, really enjoyed it!

The film raises philosophical questions, such as what aliens would be like, whether they are nice or not, and whether they are microscopic. Or... maybe we are microscopic to them? A few times during the movie, I came close to crying, but my mom sure did cry! In addition to being whimsical, this movie is heartfelt and full of dimension. As Elio’s kind says, “Okay, bye, I love you!”
